Auto Repair Shop Books Cleanup The election is on the return

Expensing a lift in the books is not the election. Expensing the asset for tax is a choice the return has to make, and that return has a due date.

Two different moments

December is when the tool truck gets paid and when a lift gets installed. The books can record the purchase on that day. The return is a later document. An election to expense qualifying property under section 179 is made on that return, for a tax year, under the rules published for that year. A journal entry that debits supplies does not file the election. A shop that discovers this in March has a coding problem and a deadline problem, and they are not the same problem.

A shop buying equipment in a tax year that starts in 2026 can read Revenue Procedure 2025-32 for a section 179 ceiling of $2,560,000, a phaseout that opens above $4,090,000 of property placed in service, and a sport-utility cap of $32,000, kept inside one citation so none of those ceilings is restated as its own slogan. Nothing on this page turns them into a promised tax saving, because a saving needs the whole return and a page is not a return.

If the date is missed

Miss the election and the asset is generally recovered over time instead of in the first year. That is a real outcome, and it is often still a clean one. What is not clean is describing the asset as already expensed when the return never said so. We would rather show depreciation that matches the filed return than a books expense that the return does not support.

Placed in service is its own test. A lift in a crate on December 31 is not the same as a lift that was bolting cars up that week. The invoice date and the in-service date can differ. We ask which day the shop actually started using the asset. The crate does not get the election.

Bring the invoice and the return date

We want the purchase invoice and the day the return is due, or the day it was filed. We will say whether an election still has a home, or whether the asset should simply be depreciated. No estimate of tax saved will be on that answer.
